Sony Group has announced it will discontinue sales of its Blu-ray Disc recorders, marking the end of a product line it once pioneered. Production has already stopped, and sales will cease once remaining inventory is sold out.
The company said it will continue shipping Blu-ray Disc players designed solely for playback, but recorders are being phased out due to shrinking demand.
Sony launched the world’s first Blu-ray Disc recorder in 2003, helping establish the format as the next generation of DVD technology. The devices became popular for allowing users to record television programs and other content in high-definition quality.
In recent years, however, consumer behavior has shifted sharply away from physical media. Cloud-based storage and on-demand streaming services have become the preferred ways to store and access video content, reducing the need for disc-based recording devices.
The decline in Blu-ray Disc recorders follows broader changes in home entertainment, as streaming platforms continue to replace traditional recording and playback hardware. Sony also ended production of Blu-ray Discs earlier this year, further signaling its move away from physical media.
